Supporting Energy Security
The Global Security Directorate is a key contributor to the Laboratory’s Energy Security mission area. We work to mitigate the national security impacts of natural disasters by developing innovative solutions that can be delivered at scale via secured critical infrastructure. These efforts depend on a modernized power-grid infrastructure that is resilient to physical, cyber and natural threats.
Our program relies on LLNL’s core competencies, including advanced materials and manufacturing, earth and atmospheric science, high-performance computing, simulation and data science and the Lab’s long history of earth systems research.

LLNL engineers hold a modular electrochemical reactor that was custom designed using a 3D printer. Using 3D-printed reactors can allow control of every aspect of the reactor design down to the micron level.
