Conflict Simulation

Illustration of JCATS

The Conflict Simulation Laboratory (CSL) at LLNL provides state-of-the-art tools to simulate the effects of actions and events and model combat including hundreds of thousands of objects and variables including weather and air traffic to ensure realistic scenarios.

Training and Systems Analysis

The Conflict Simulation Lab (CSL) at LLNL plays a vital role in advancing the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD), Joint Staff J7, NATO, and allied partners. By developing and integrating advanced conflict simulation tools like the Joint Tactical and Conflict Simulation (JCATS) system and JCATS Low Overhead Driver (JLOD), the CSL supports LLNL’s mission areas of Nuclear Deterrence, Threat Preparedness and Response and Multi-Domain Deterrence.

CSL products enable simulation-driven operational and systems analyses using tailored environments and precise force characteristics to address evolving national and global security challenges.

CSL simulation tools in unified training environments strengthen DoD alliances, deter adversaries, and advance strategic-deterrence goals. By demonstrating interoperability and the U.S.'s ability to project an effective fighting force, the CSL ensures readiness across multiple conflict domains.

Multi-National Training and Interoperability Exercises

During the Exercise Avenge Triad 24, the United States European Command Joint Operations Center received mission command updates stimulated by JCATS feeds. JCATS was the primary driver for the exercise, which was comprised of a readiness exercises and experimentation and consisted of seven corps and eight nations across nine different locations.

The Joint Multinational Simulation Center INDOPACOM (JMSC-IP) hosts an annual bilateral, joint training event with the U.S. Army and Singaporean military. The event involves live exercises, information exchanges, and constructive simulation training with JCATS interoperating with Singapore’s AWSS simulation. JCATS and JLOD are also leveraged by the combatant commands to provide joint task force certification for deploying units as well as exercising operational plans with allies.

Security Analysis

JCATS and JLOD help LLNL and government partners conduct security analysis for fixed-site security and preventative measures to enhance physical safety and response times of security forces.

Nuclear Model

Nuclear Effects Modeling

Supporting the Lab’s priority missions, the CSL provides modeling to facilitate analysis of nuclear event effects and weapons in combat scenarios.
