The Global Security Directorate develops technical capabilities and decision tools for wide-ranging defense and homeland security missions. We enhance the security and efficiency of software releases for Department of Defense (DoD) platforms by utilizing advanced software and data-science tools within a systems-engineering framework.
Recent breakthroughs in machine learning have enabled the resolution of complex control and reinforcement-learning problems, allowing for efficient decision support in national security scenarios.
To enhance national border and port security, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) provides sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques to assess and mitigate physical threats as well as radiation detection technologies. Lab-developed innovative technologies include conflict simulation, tunnel detection and drone surveillance and inspection, alongside counter-drone technologies to safeguard critical infrastructure.
LLNL also provides extensive support to military, domestic and international partners via a suite of tools and capabilities including data-driven simulations, underground hazard detection and emergency response and training. Our expertise in understanding risks and developing technologies for effective emergency preparedness and incident response puts us in a key position to address a wide range of threats, including atmospheric, chemical, biological, explosive and nuclear hazards.
The Autonomous Sensors Team trains Unmanned Aerial Systems and other vehicles using advanced artificial intelligence to network, cooperate and complete tasks too hazardous for humans, such as searching for and identifying underground hazards.
