Cybersecurity

Building Resilience

Our critical infrastructure — energy, water, transportation, and communications systems, for example — plays a key role in our national security, just as it does in our daily lives. The Laboratory focuses on developing and guiding the secure, resilient and sustainable operation of U.S. critical infrastructure, as well as defending against cyber threats.

By bringing unique expertise and key capabilities to bear on this challenge, we are tackling some of the most complex and critical challenges posed by persistent and pervasive cyber attacks on our critical infrastructure.

Skyfall computer

Skyfall, a combined cyber–physical, hardware-in-the-loop test bed, connects real-world equipment with high-performance computers, strengthening the fidelity of simulations to defend against potential cyberattacks.

Developing a Layered Defense

As conflict between nation states now includes the cyber domain, the Laboratory is developing capabilities that can be applied in a layered defense, particularly for the defense of the nation’s critical infrastructure. We examine critical infrastructure inter-dependencies and vulnerabilities, identify enhancements to make these systems more resilient to cyber, physical and natural hazards.

The Laboratory has developed a framework for guiding our efforts to protect critical infrastructure from national security threats. By applying concepts from biological immunity, this framework marshals our efforts to develop intelligent, self-healing and resilient systems, thereby protecting information (IT) and operational (OT) networks from cyber attacks and physical disruptions.
